The Production Studios Which Make Movies Possible!

Honestly! What would the world be like without movies? Well the quick answer would be, a lot less entertaining. As that would mean we have lost the ultimate source of entertainment which mankind has ever created which causes us to feel all emotions at an increased level without actually going anywhere. Movies make us laugh, cry, jump with joy and grab the nearest pillow in fear which if we were all being honest would have to admit to missing if it wasn’t there (that of course being movies).

The production companies fund the making of movies offering the resources and manpower required to make it all possible. It is exciting to look back over the past hundred years and look at the great movies which have been produced by some of the most influential production companies in the world. Least to say we all have our favourite movie, our favourite actors/actresses and of course the least spoken of production companies.

The following list of the ”top 10 production companies of all time” has the big 5 production companies as well as a following 5 others which have reshaped the film industry forever. The list rankings are based on research as well as personal opinions over which have had the largest impact over the years, offering the best library of movies.

Enjoy…

Sony (Owner of Sony Pictures Entertainment)

Sony Pictures Entertainment is Sony’s movie production, television production and distribution which operates in America. Sony Pictures entertainment’s major studio subsidiary is Columbia Pictures which Sony acquired in 1989 from ‘The Coca-Cola Company’ for $3.4 billion.

Sony Pictures entertainment are friendly to independent producers with its own division catering for them which is called Sony Pictures Classics.

The company through its distribution subsidiary called Screen Gems, also backs Genre B (mid-priced movies) movie producers with a production budget of between $20 million and $50 million.

Sony is considered to have the biggest studio today which begs the question- why weren’t they chosen for the number 1 spot on this list? Now the reason is due to the fact that in my opinion they are not the best production company, at least not out of the movie production companies on this list. However Sony Pictures Entertainment is without a doubt one of the best movie production companies in the world (which is why they landed a number 2 spot on this list).

Sony Pictures Entertainment also own other companies and brands which include;

  • TriStar Pictures
  • Sony Pictures Animation
  • Destination Films
  • Triumph Films
  • Stage 6 Films
  • Affirm Films

Sony Pictures entertainment have produced some great movies over the years as well as some great movie franchises which includes Spider-Man, Men in Black and Resident Evil.

Not only is it that Sony Pictures Entertainment are considered the biggest studio in the world today but they also own Columbia Pictures which has been producing movies since 1924 which is pretty impressive. Sony certainly have the power to change everything they enter into and the film industry is no exception as their subsidiary Sony Pictures Entertainment has proved over the years, only gaining more success as time moves forward.

NBC Universal (Owner of Universal Pictures)

Universal Studios is owned by Comcast through its subsidiary NBCUniversal and is one of Hollywood’s ”big six” movie studios. Among Universal Studios units (a division) is Universal Animation Studios which creates animated feature films and TV series and among the feature films include The Land Before Time, An American Tail and Balto.

Universal Studios have produced some timeless classics over the years, having now operated as a movie production company since 1920 producing movies. As well as this Universal studios have produced some box office hits which include Jurassic Park, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial and Jaws which were all directed by Steven Spielberg.

Another division owned by Universal Studios is Illumination Entertainment which was founded in 2007 by Chris Meledandri. Illumination Entertainment has proven to be a success after having created an animated feature movie called Despicable Me (2010) which has received at the box office a worldwide gross of $543 million (2nd July 2014). If that wasn’t enough, Illumination entertainment released a sequel to Despicable Me in 2013 called Despicable Me 2 which has so far received $970 million (2nd July 2014) at the box office.

Universal Studios also owns other divisions which include;

  • Universal Studios Home Entertainment
  • Focus Features
  • Working Title Films

Universal Studios have not gained their enormous success solely through the help of possibly the best director they have ever had the opportunity to work with, of course being Steven Spielberg. But through the vast movie library of movies which have been produced by Universal Studios, among this list a few franchises include The Fast and the Furious, The Bourne Identity (series) and Hannibal (series).

There is no doubt that Universal Studios have become one of the most influential movie production studios in the world as well as having a memorable and iconic logo (of earth). It is through great movies and wise decisions that have led Universal Studios to become one of Hollywood’s ”big six” studios.

 21st Century Fox (Owner of 20th Century Fox)

20th Century Fox (also known as 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, 20th Century Fox Pictures and Fox) is a movie studio and one of Hollywood’s ”big six” major movie studios located in America. 20th Century Fox is now a subsidiary of 21st Century Fox (as of 2013-present) but was previously owned by News Corporation (1985-2013).

20th Century Fox has been producing movies since 1935 and they have grown with immense success, gaining a place among the ”big six” movie studios in Hollywood. 20th Century Fox have produced some of the most successful movie of all time and among these is the top worldwide grossing movie of all time Avatar (released 2009) with a total worldwide gross of over $2 billion (2nd July 2014).

20th Century Fox have also produced some amazing and successful franchises, among them include Star Wars, Ice Age and X-Men. 20th Century Fox’s original animation division Fox Animation Studios was started up in 1994 to compete with Walt Disney Animation Studios, which at the time was making hugely successful movies like Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. However Fox Animation Studios did not see success in their endeavours as they released their first animated feature film in 1997 called Anastasia which was critically acclaimed, often mistaken as a Walt Disney movie. Although the profit did not reflect this as at the worldwide box office ‘Anastasia’ made just $140 million on a $53 million budget. Fox Animation Studios next movie did even worse making a worldwide gross of $37 million on a $75 million budget and the movie was called Titan A.E. (released 2000). This led to Fox Animation Studios shutting down in 2000 as it had been a complete failure lacking in box office success and computer animation technology.

However on the other hand 20th Century Fox have seen success from Blue Sky Studios (20th Century Fox’s subsidiary) which they obtained in 1997, which is a computer animation company which creates animated feature films. Among the list of successful movies produced by Blue Sky Studios is Ice Age, Robots and Rio.

20th Century Fox also own other divisions and subsidiary’s which include;

  • 20th Century Fox Animation
  • Fox Searchlight Pictures
  • 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment
  • Fox Star Studios

Fox have seen success, failure and ultimate exposure as they became one of the ”big six” movie studios in Hollywood. 20th Century fox will undoubtedly continue to succeed as time moves forward, hopefully continuing some of the current franchises which they own the rights to and make some now and exciting franchises as well.

20th Century Fox at the ‘Box Office’

Of the top 50 box office grossing movies of all time (2nd July 2014), 7 of these movies were produced by 20th Century Fox. Now that’s a good result for 20th Century Fox however of the top 10 grossing movies of all time (2nd July 2014), only 1 of the movies were produced by 20th Century Fox.

Viacom (Owner of Paramount Pictures)

Paramount Pictures (aka Paramount Pictures Corporation and Paramount) is a movie studio company operating in America as one of Hollywood’s ”big six” movie studios. Paramount Pictures is a subsidiary of Viacom a U.S. media conglomerate.

Paramount Pictures has been producing movies since 1912 and has produced some of the greatest movies ever created. The most successful movie ever produced by Paramount Pictures is Titanic (released in 1997) which has gathered a worldwide gross of $2 billion.

Over the years Paramount Pictures have produced some great movie series which include Mission Impossible, Indiana Jones and Transformers. If success is measured by the money earned by a company then Paramount have certainly succeeded as they are consistently ranked as one of Hollywood’s ”big six” movie studios.

Among the divisions owned by Paramount Pictures is Paramount Animation which was started in 2011 after the box office success of the animated feature film ‘Rango’ which Paramount Pictures helped distribute for Dreamworks Animation. Paramount Animation was announced by Paramount Pictures as a division dedicated to the creation of animated feature films which will be able to compete with the likes of Dreamworks, Walt Disney and Pixar. An exciting division with potential success in the future with announcements for releases in 2015 which include the following title feature films; The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and Monster Trucks.

Paramount Pictures also own other divisions which include;

  • Paramount Home Media Distribution
  • Paramount Famous Productions

Viacom Media Networks branded labels;

  • Nickelodeon Movies
  • MTV Films
  • Paramount Vantage

The future for Paramount Pictures is certainly bright with the prospects for a successful Animation division (called Paramount Animation) which if it is anything like Walt Disney’s or Dream works Animation divisions, should amaze us all.

Lions Gate Entertainment (aka Lionsgate)

Lions Gate Entertainment (aka Lions gate) is the most commercially successful mini major movie and television distribution company in North America as well as the seventh most profitable movie studio.

Lions gate started producing movies in 1997 and have succeeded through the help of other studios which they have sub-licensed movies with which includes Trimark Pictures, Vestron Pictures and Artisan Entertainment.

Lions gate have helped produce some great movies series which include Kick-Ass, The Expendables and The Hunger Games. There is no telling where Lions gate will be 5 years from now but I would imagine with the level of success they are having at the moment with the smart investments they may soon make the transition in becoming a major studio. All they need is time!

Among the subsidiaries owned by Lions gate is Summit Entertainment which is possibly their most successful subsidiary at this moment in time after having produced fairly recent success’s which include Twilight, Knowing and Now You See Me. Another smart investment by the growing mini major studio (called Lions gate).

Lions gate also own other divisions which include;

  • Lions gate Films
  • Lions gate Home Entertainment

Lions gate also own other subsidiaries which include;

  • Roadside Attractions

Lions gate has an extremely successful company which has grown tremendously since it was founded in 1997. All we can hope now is that Lions gate continue to produce great movies and franchises as well as hopefully growing large enough to become a major studio in Hollywood.

The Weinstein Company (Owner of Dimension Films)

The Weinstein Company is owned by two brothers (Bob Weinstein and Harvey Weinstein) who previously worked for Miramax Films (owned by Disney). The Weinstein Company is an American mini major movie studio and has become a success since starting up in 2005.

Among the successful movies produced my The Weinstein Company is Derailed, Scream 4 and 1408. In the little time that The Weinstein Company have been operating as a movie production studio they have managed to gain a reputation for creating great movies which have had good box office success.

Among the successful movies produced by The Weinstein Company is Django Unchained (released in 2012) which received over $425 million at the box office (worldwide gross).

Among the divisions owned by The Weinstein Company is Dimension films which was bought and used by the Weinstein brothers to use within their company. Since The Weinstein Company bought the Dimension Films brand they have produced some great sequels to old movies which include Scary Movie 4 (and 5), Scream 4 and Spy Kids: All the Time in the World.

The Weinstein Company are an interesting company with an interesting library of movies which haven’t disappointed. Owning the division brand label Dimension Films was clearly a wise decision allowing them to create some great movies with the ownership of film series like Scream, Scary Movie and Spy Kids.

The Weinstein Company at the ‘Box Office’

Of the top 50 box office grossing movies of all time (2nd July 2014), none of these movies were produced by The Weinstein Company. This of course reflects badly on the company although they only started the company in 2005 and have had a large selection of moderately successful movies as well as a couple which have exceeded expectations.

When widening the search a little to the top 200 box office grossing movies of all time (2nd July 2014), 3 of these movies were produced by The Weinstein Company. This isn’t bad considering these movies still made a substantial return with the profit they made. The three movies include the following;

1 – The Intouchables – Ranked 171

2 – Django Unchained – Ranked 172

3 – The King’s Speech – Ranked 180

 MGM (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios)

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (aka Metro Goldwyn Mayer, Metro Goldwyn Pictures and MGM) is an American media company which primarily produces movies and television programs. Founded in 1924 MGM was once the biggest and considered by lots as the best movie studio in the world. However after filing for bankruptcy in November 2010 and emerging from bankruptcy in December 2010, MGM is now the worlds eighth mini major movie studio.

MGM have produced some timeless classics over the years which includes Ben-Hur, The Dirty Dozen and GoldenEye. There is no doubt that a lot of MGM’s success came in the later years through the ownership of the James Bond series which is a real audience pleaser as we have currently gone through countless James Bond faces including the latest and greatest ‘Daniel Craig’ (current James Bond, 2014). However the future success or failure of MGM will all depend on the movies they produce and how well they do in the box office as to get back to being a major studio, MGM need to up their game creating plenty of box office hits.

Dream Works Pictures (aka Dream Works Studios, Dream Works SKG, Dream Works, LLC and Dream Works) is a movie studio which produces movies and television programs. Dream Works was founded by 3 people who decided they wanted to own a large percentage of a new Hollywood studio (these people include Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen).

Dream Works was founded in 1994 and since then the studio has produced some great movies including Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator and Transformers. It is clear to see that with some major influence from the unmatched and successful movie director Steven Spielberg, the Dream Works company has been able to succeed in all aspects. Dream Works has enabled Spielberg to act more freely as a director and make more money in doing so as he has used the Dream Works company in all almost of his projects since it was founded in 1994.

One of Dream Works biggest and most successful divisions was Dream Works Animation which brought Dream Works huge financial success with movies such as Antz, The Prince of Egypt, Chicken Run and Shrek (1 and 2). Until Dream Works Animation was spun off in 2004 into its own publicly traded company under the management of Jeffrey Katzenberg.
